Project Planning & Project Controls Training

Understanding planning and controls in a classroom is one thing. Applying it under the pressure of a live capital programme is something else entirely. You need professional planning and controls training to be competent, where schedule updates are overdue, cost data is inconsistent, and the project manager needs answers by Friday. Total PMO Solutions offers the training specifically designed for that second environment: practical, applied, and grounded in the realities of complex project delivery.

With over 15 years of hands-on experience implementing and operating EVM systems across oil & gas, utilities, power transmission and generation, and defence, we teach what we do — not a textbook interpretation of what control is supposed to look like. That difference shows in how quickly your team can put the learning to work.

Planning and Controls Training Courses — What We Cover

Our Planning and control training courses are structured around the disciplines your team needs to master, such as

  • Project structures
  • Building a WBS and CBS
  • Schedule logic and key concepts
  • Understanding EVM principles,
  • Setting up a compliant measurement baseline,
  • Collecting and validating performance data,
  • Interpreting the metrics, and
  • Communicating findings to stakeholders

Everything at every level of the organisation is being taken care of.

Training is tailored to your team’s starting point — whether that is a foundation-level introduction to planning/control concepts or an advanced session focused on implementation challenges, variance analysis, and forecasting.

Core topics across our planning and controls training programmes include:

  • EVM fundamentals — budgeted cost of work scheduled (BCWS), earned value (EV), actual cost (AC), and the metrics derived from them
  • Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and Control Account setup — the structural foundation that makes EVM work
  • Baseline development and change control — maintaining the integrity of your performance measurement baseline
  • Progress measurement methods — choosing the right technique for different work types and verifying physical percent complete
  • Variance analysis and forecasting — interpreting CPI, SPI, EAC, and VAC in the context of your programme
  • Reporting and communication — translating EVM data into decision-ready information for project and executive audiences

Who Can Enrol in Our Training?

Our training is relevant for anyone involved in managing, measuring, or reporting project performance on capital programmes. That includes

  • Project controls engineers and planners who need to set up and operate an EVM system,
  • Project managers who need to understand what the metrics mean and how to act on them,
  • PMO staff responsible for portfolio-level performance reporting, and
  • Cost engineers whose data feeds the EVM calculations.

We also deliver training for senior leaders and project sponsors who need to read and challenge Earned Value Management reports confidently — without necessarily understanding the mechanics behind them.

Delivered Around Your Team — Flexible, Focused, Practical

We do not run public schedule courses that your team attends alongside strangers working in unrelated industries. Our training is focused on your team only, whether it is on-site, remotely, or in a hybrid format. We use your actual project environment as the context wherever possible.

It implies that the examples, data structures, and reporting challenges your team works through during our training program are only related to the work they will be doing immediately afterwards.

Session length and depth are structured around your needs. A focused half-day introduction for a project management team looks very different from a two-day implementation workshop for a project controls group setting up EVM for the first time on a major capital programme. We scope every engagement individually.

FAQ
Is the training delivered remotely or onsite?

We offer both options. We deliver on-site at your office or project location, remotely via videoconference, as well as in a hybrid format. We work around your team’s availability and timeline.

Yes. All training is customised to your sector and project environment. Our experience across oil & gas, utilities, power, and defence means we understand the specific controls challenges and contract structures that shape how EVM is applied in your industry.

Training is software-agnostic and focused on principles and application. We can incorporate any tool into the practical elements of the session that you want us to do.

Yes. Implementation support is a core service at Total PMO Solutions. Many training engagements naturally lead into hands-on implementation assistance — helping your team apply what they have learned on a live programme with experienced support alongside them.

Session length depends on the scope and depth required. Foundation sessions typically run half a day to a full day. Implementation-focused workshops for project controls teams may run over two days. We agree the format with you during scoping.
